COFFEE TABLE 41
A hand-crafted walnut table combining organic and architectural elements.
The original intent of Coffee Table 41 was to contrast, yet complement Side Table 31. The goals were to create a table with a live edge (to contrast the strict lines of side table 31, include a multifunctional element, keep the legs visually light and offer an element of surprise.
After some sketching, the table was developed in SketchUp. The “slab” top was strategically constructed of two thinner walnut live edge boards. Constructing the top this way allowed for hollow space to add a full-length hidden draw and a recessed slot in the top, while saving on cost and weight. I split the boards and reassembled them to give the illusion of a full slab, while not hiding the laminated joints. The top features an integrated live edge drawer
and a multi-use recessed slot. The slot was sized to accommodate books stood on end for display and is backlit by LEDs. The books, placed on their edge, interact with the coffee table in an unexpected way, add whimsy and enhance the architectural and utilitarian look of the table. The books invite themselves to be grasped by the hand and read. The slot echoes the elements of my previous furniture designs. I used slots/cut-outs in Side Table 31 and in earlier graduate work to visually break up large planes, add transparency, offer additional functionality
and take advantage of unused negative volumes.
The legs are bare ¼” steel rod welded into to a light bridge-like base to support the heavier top. The triangle construction and thin steel rods allow the slab to appear floating. To give the drawer the largest depth possible, the one-piece base carries the load of the top on the far ends, giving `the base an industrial bridge-like structure.
